HEART of SMC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2003 with the mission to create and preserve affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families in San Mateo County. They raise and invest funds from public and private sources to support affordable housing development, provide loans to developers, offer educational workshops and loans to first-time homebuyers, and assist communities in meeting their housing goals. With over 20 years of experience, HEART has made a significant impact by investing $27 million in affordable housing development, providing $9 million in down payment assistance to first-time homebuyers, and developing 1,632 affordable homes.
As they celebrate their 20th Anniversary, HEART continues to innovate and expand their programs, including the Housing Preservation Small Sites NOAH Program and Consulting Program. They have also introduced the Green Livable Accessory Dwelling Unit Resource (GLADUR), which offers free all-electric ADU designs that have been pre-reviewed and approved in five cities. Through their efforts, HEART aims to ensure that San Mateo County remains a thriving and diverse community with affordable housing options for all.
