Golden Mean Vegan Cafe replaced the popular Anastasia's Asylum in this space in 2009. Founder Aaron Glassman intends to establish a special community within Santa Monica with his vegan cafe. Chef Britt Hawley brings her experience from Natural Gourmet Institute in New York and as Head Chef at Real Food Daily to create a unique menu of delicious, affordable vegan food. Items on the menu are made from a variety of vegetables, tempeh, vegan "chicken" and Daiya vegan cheese. Sandwiches include the tempeh club sandwich, portabello mushroom panini and vegan "chicken" pesto panini, while entrees offered include tacos, enchiladas and "chicken" parmigiana. A special brunch is served on the weekends. The space features a dining room in the front, with an upstairs "lounge" area. Crystal pieces, gifts and metaphysical books are on display and for sale throughout the restaurant. Paintings for sale by Sri Gopala Yantra also adorn the walls. "Golden Mean" refers to a mathematical formula introduced by Aristotle, which is a ratio of proportions found in many places in nature, such as the inside of a snail shell. Metaphysically, it represents the connection of all things, and a spiritual middle way.
