The Getty Research Institute advances the understanding of visual arts. The institute has a research library that maintains a collection of more than 900,000 volumes of books, periodicals and auction catalogs, as well as serves scholars and the public. It develops exhibitions for J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Research Institute also offers publications that cover topics, such as digital continuity, constructing image databases, metadata standards and controlled vocabularies. In addition, the institute publishes exhibition catalogs and volumes. It sponsors a variety of public events, such as lectures, panel discussions, performances and film screenings. The Getty Research Institute is a part of the J. Paul Getty Trust.
