The Engineering Library at Stanford, at its new location in the Jen Hsun Huang Engineering Center, open August 2, 2010, will have at least 98,000 fewer print items on the shelves. The library's reduction of about 85 percent of its print catalog is an attempt to move towards a digital model for providing science and technology information. It will add more specialized digital content and focus on providing e-books and new technology. Though print materials will still be stored and accessible within a day or two, many of these print items will be available as e-books. The Engineering Library is designed to support Stanford students and faculty, as well as other scholars and researchers, with course reserves, databases, reports, journals, patents, equipment and reference support in the field of engineering. Patrons must have a Stanford ID to have access to course reserves, certain computers, databases and other research services, as well as the wireless network. Visitors who are not affiliated with Stanford may gain access to the library for up to seven single-day uses in a 12-month period. This is free, but users must pre-register with a photo ID. Additional access privileges may be also purchased at the Cecil H. Green Library privileges desk.
