The headquarters of the Sonoma Valley Fire Department is located on Second Street near the intersection of W. Napa Street. Since 2002, the department has operated as a joint association between the City of Sonoma Fire Department and the Valley of the Moon Fire Protection District. The department employs roughly 100 full- and part-time firefighters, paramedics, ambulance operators, and administrators, and owns nine fire trucks (divided between urban engines, ladder vehicles, and a water-carrying vehicle). It operates four fire stations providing service to a 31.45-square-mile area including Sonoma, El Verano, Boyles Hot Springs, Agua Caliente and Seven Flags. Many of the firefighters are also paramedics, allowing them to operate ambulance service to about 100 square miles of the Sonoma Valley. The headquarters holds housing and recreational facilities for on-call firefighters, a training center for new recruits, and a fire museum, containing 19th- and 20th-century fire trucks, uniforms and artifacts from the department's history. Each fire department is run by a Board of Directors, whose five members are elected every other November by district voters. The department hosts a community open-house every October, and operates the SCOPE community outreach program and a citizen emergency response team. Fire chief Philip Garcia invites the public to stop by his office to discuss the fire department.
