Although this church calls itself Methodist, Pastor Larry Thomas emphasizes that only a "small proportion" of the congregation are "lifelong" Methodists. Community United Methodist was founded in 1864, and the church building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The church sponsors a number of programs for youth, adults and adults over age 50, including three adult choirs, Sunday School, an annual vacation Bible School, a children's program that hosts regular activities and a care team to support fellow congregation members in need. It is also active in providing assistance to the surrounding community through food drives, by sponsoring local families during holiday seasons, and by collecting school supplies for Coastside students in need.
