History
The Garden was co-founded by a recent landscape architecture program graduate who fell in love with California native plants while at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and by a long-time environmental planner for Sacramento County who was looking to do more than battle with developers. The baby landscape designer is now a licensed landscape architect happily working on riparian mitigation and the environmental planner? She took an early retirement and now gets to devote more time to developing the Garden. In 1997, we started off by adopting 10 plots in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery and sowing native wildflower seeds. Not satisfied with that effort, we then adopted about 190 more plots and began planting hundreds of natives over the last 15 years. To find the Garden, enter through the gates on Broadway at 10th Street. Make an immediate left (east). Follow this road as it turns right (south) and runs parallel to Riverside Blvd. At the end of this road is the Garden.
Specialties
Tucked away in the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery, the California Native Plant Demonstration Garden isn't located where you'd expect a demonstration garden to be. But nevermind the unusual location; the historic brick and granite plots are the perfect showcase for over 100 species of California natives that are not only beautiful, but increase water conservation, enhance pollinator and beneficial insect populations, increase wildlife habitat values, and preserve the rich diversity of California's native plants. Our California natives hail from northern to southern California and the Garden blooms almost continuously from February through October. We conduct spring and summer tours, but you can visit the Garden anytime during the open hours of the cemetery. You can also visit us on Facebook for the latest on what's blooming, events, and more - www.facebook.com/CaliforniaNativePlantGarden.
