The California Highway Patrol is a full-service state agency that provides safety and security services to the residents of California. Established in 1929 as a highway patrol agency, the California Highway Patrol also provides protection to state buildings and facilities, conducts criminal investigations and assists local law enforcement agencies. It is one of the largest state police agencies in the United States and employs more than 9,500 police officers. The California Highway Patrol s officers are responsible for for the investigation and disposal of car accidents, debris, dead animals and other impediments to the free flow of traffic. The department also summons paramedics and tow truck drivers. The California Highway Patrol maintains an office in San Bernardino, Calif.
