History
Established in the early 1900's, the Black Butte originally served as a roadhouse and a pack station for travellers going up the Eel River to the Yolla Bolly Wilderness by mule. It's pole barn, it's remaining two cabins and it's store structure are all examples of the early buildings that served this purpose. Old timers have shared stories of coming to the Black Butte while hunting with their fathers in the 30's and 40's, remembering passed out loggers and cowboys asleep in front of the store after a Saturday night of celebration. Since becoming owners of the Black Butte in 2005 we have continued modernising the facilities and services that we offer while maintaining the historic nature of the Butte. Our mesquite BBQ grill, remodeled facilities, wifi and cable TV in the cabins are all examples of the kinds of changes that are adding to our customer's enjoyment. While the times and the faces have changed the unique character of the area and it's people remain much the same.
