History
Initial development of the Yuma Civic Center 'Recreation Complex' came about as a result of the combination of the vision and foresight of Yuma's political and business leadership's wish to meet the expressed needs of the community. In October of 1972, ground was broken for the convention center. In the late 1980's the 'Image of Yuma' project was undertaken by a community group to provide a public art experience for all those who visit the Civic Center. Donations of artwork in all medium were sought from various local artists for a permanent art collection to be donated to the City of Yuma and housed permanently at the center. The collection remains today, one of the first public art displays in a city facility. Through the years, the Yuma City Council has supported the role of the Civic Center as a dual use convention site and community activity facility, voting to maintain affordable rental rates and to provide for community utilization of the facility.
