Water Mark is a captivating public art installation located in Scottsdale, AZ. Designed by artists Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan, this innovative artwork consists of five 14-foot high aluminum equine gargoyle sculptures positioned along the Indian Bend Wash flood control greenbelt. These sculptures, with their unique poses, serve as both a roadside landmark and an earthwork, symbolizing the resilience of the community in the face of natural elements. During flash flooding, water pours from the gargoyles' mouths, creating a dramatic and immersive experience for viewers.
In addition to the equine gargoyles, Water Mark features a series of earthworks in the south basin, accessible via multi-use pathways. These earthworks include stadia walls and flow berms that measure changing water levels during flows, incorporating sculptural square notches and red tile insets to mark the water level. Inspired by the local mesquite groves that become islands during flooding, these elements pay homage to the natural environment and the wildlife that call it home. With its combination of artistry, functionality, and connection to the community, Water Mark is a must-see attraction in Scottsdale.
