The United States Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, administers more than 260 million acres of public lands. The agency s range is primarily located in 12 Western states. It sustains the health, diversity and productivity of the public lands for the use of present and future generations. The Bureau of Land Management also maintains 700 million-plus acres of subsurface mineral estate throughout the nation. The agency manages a wide range of activities, such as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development and energy production. It conserves timber, forage, minerals, wild horse and burro populations, fish and wildlife habitats, wilderness areas and archaeological, paleontological and historical sites. The Bureau of Land Management also conducts wildfire management and suppression initiatives. The agency was created in 1946. It operates in numerous cities, including Phoenix.
