The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities is a statewide public service agency that designs, constructs, operates and maintains the state s transportation infrastructure systems, buildings and additional facilities. It operates more than 5,000 miles of paved and gravel highways, as well as over 300 transportation facilities, including airports, small harbors and ferry systems that serve nearly 30 coastal communities. The department operates design and engineering services division that provides technical services to the department, other state and federal agencies and governments. In addition, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has a maintenance and operations division that is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of various policies and procedures. It supports statewide transportation improvement, industrial road and highway safety programs. The department is headquartered in Juneau, Alaska.
