In 1984, a group of petroleum industry professionals recognized the need for a refinery that produced only light fuels that were critical to heating homes and operating businesses. Petro Star built its first refinery strategically positioned along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. PSI could obtain crude oil directly from the pipeline and still enjoy commercial and transportation advantages available in Fairbanks, Alaska. The company acquired a number of fuel distribution companies, such as Sourdough Fuel, and began to distribute its products throughout interior Alaska and the Arctic Slope. In 1991, Petro Star expanded into the lubricants market with the purchase of Alaska Lube and Fuel, now known as Petro Star Lubricants. The company is one of the few Alaskan-owned refining and fuel marketing operations in the state and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation. Petro Star is located in Anchorage, Alaska.
