The Department of Youth Services, a part of the State of Alabama Merit System, provides a range of programs and services for youths. It offers employment and research opportunities. The department operates several facilities, including Alabama Youth Homes, Laurel Oaks, Montgomery Group Home and New Horizons. The Department of Youth Services provides the Autauga HIT program, which includes early intervention and drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. Its Chalkville Campus features a chapel, dining room, cottages, and academic school, central administration, and security and recreation buildings for girls. The department offers group counseling, value clarification, medical, social skills and assertiveness training, and sex and physical education services. The Department of Youth Services also works for the remediation of basic skills for math, reading, science, history and language arts.
