State Farm Insurance has grown from a small farm mutual automobile insurer to one of the world's largest financial institutions with a top 20 ranking in the Fortune 500. George J. Mecherle established State Farm Insurance on the belief that farmers should pay less for insurance because they drove less and had fewer losses than folks living in cities. Using this idea, he started State Farm in 1922 as a mutual automobile insurance company that was owned by its policyholders. In 1928, the company s first branch office opened in Berkeley, Calif. State Farm has grown to include 76,000 employees and more than 16,700 agents that service more than 71 million policies in the United States and Canada. The State Farm Insurance office in Birmingham, Ala., is one of several locations throughout the U.S.
