St. James No. 1 Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Decatur, AL has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it was organized in a tool shed. Despite facing challenges during times of economic hardship, the church remained steadfast in its faith and gratitude towards God. Over the years, the congregation grew stronger and a new building was constructed in the northeast section of Decatur. However, due to urban renewal, the church property was consumed, leading to the purchase of new lots in West Decatur. With the dedication and support of its members, a new church was built on the present-day site on West Moulton Street, which was completed in 2002. Under the leadership of various pastors, including the current Reverend Michael L. Jones, the church has experienced spiritual growth and ministry expansion, ultimately retiring its church mortgage in 2016.
