The DeKalb County Sheriff s Office operates administrative, patrol and mounted units and a special response team. Its administrative unit manages files of all cases handled by investigators and registers sex offenders. The office s special response team helps to combat drug cases and hostage situations. Its mounted unit, organized in 2002, participates in search, rescue and apprehend operations. The DeKalb County Sheriff s Office also operates a corrections division that is responsible for housing incarcerated people who are awaiting trial. Its patrol officers serve civil papers, subpoenas, and felony and misdemeanor warrants. Located in Fort Payne, Ala., the sheriff s office additionally employs school resource officers who prevent and quickly respond to situations that pose a danger to students.
