Founded in 1972, the Birmingham Urban League is an affiliate of the National Urban League, which is one of the oldest and largest community-based movements devoted to empowering African-Americans and other minorities to enter the social and economic mainstream in the United States. It has affiliates in more than 100 cities in over 35 states and the District of Columbia. The Birmingham Urban League is a partner of United Way of Central Alabama. It offers education, housing, workforce development and youth services. The Birmingham Urban League promotes civic engagement, educational enrichment, equal opportunity, health and wellness and voter registration. It also has an active Young Professionals Chapter that hosts regular membership meetings, community forums, nextworking mixers and identifies opportunities for civic participation.
