Founded in 1881, the American Red Cross is one of the leading emergency response organizations in the United States. Based in Selma, Ala., it offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war. The organization also aids victims of devastating natural disasters. In addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in areas, including community services to help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families as well as the collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products. American Red Cross carries out educational programs that promote health, safety, international relief and also development programs.
