A Historic Pathway
During World War II, the military constructed the Koko Head Railway as a means to transport supplies and personnel to the military bunkers situated atop the crater. Today, this historic railway has been repurposed into a hiking trail known as the Koko Crater Trail. Consisting of 1,048 railroad ties, this trail presents a formidable challenge for hikers.
The Journey Begins
To embark on this thrilling adventure, head to Koko Head District Park in Hawai'i Kai. The trailhead can be found behind the baseball field, and ample parking is available for your convenience. As you set foot on the trail, you'll immediately be greeted by a steep incline, and the true magnitude of the challenge ahead will become apparent.
A Stairway to Greatness
The Koko Crater Trail is often referred to as the "Koko Head Stairs of Doom" due to the grueling ascent it entails. Each step brings you closer to the summit, but it also tests your physical limits. The railroad ties, now transformed into stairs, present an uneven and sometimes slippery surface, requiring careful foot placement and steady determination.
Overcoming Adversity
As you ascend, the breathtaking views begin to unfold, offering glimpses of Aina Haina, Sandys Beach, and the picturesque south shore of O'ahu. Hanauma Bay and Hawaii Kai gradually come into view, adding to the allure of this challenging hike. Despite the physical demands, the sense of accomplishment and the beauty that surrounds you make every step worthwhile.
