Every Richmond local looks forward to summer at Belle Isle. Photographers come to capture the eagles and waterfowl that soar around this island in the James River, while sunbathers stretch out over the rocks above the rapids. With access from the Canal Walk and stunning views of downtown, there's no better way for the lover of the outdoors to spend an afternoon.
Parking and Public Transportation to Belle Isle
Access to Belle Isle is via a pedestrian bridge from Tredegar street, so there is no parking directly on the island. Some locals access the island by boulder hopping from the southern shore of the James River when the water level is low, and there is an alternate bridge near 22nd street that is less frequently used. Public parking is available in the city in garages and by street meters. Public transportation is not a reliable way to access Belle Isle, especially if outdoor sports equipment must be carried with you.
Best and Worst Times to Visit Belle Isle
This rocky island on the James River is a summer hot spot. Weekends tend to be much more crowded, though if you prefer to bike the trails instead of lounging in the sun, any day of the week is acceptable. Mid morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable for outdoor activities since the summer heat is at its worst in the middle of the day.
Admission to Belle Isle
Access to Belle Isle is free, like the other locations in the James River Park System, but you may have to pay for parking nearby.
Must See at Belle Isle
Keep an eye out for bald eagles, which nest in the tall trees on Belle Isle. The island offers a respite for wildlife that doesn't thrive in the urban downtown, so it is a great spot for the avid nature lover or photographer.
Other Places to Visit Near Belle Isle
From this vantage point on the river, you can see Hollywood Cemetery and the old Tredegar Iron Works. There are more than 100 dining options within a few minutes' drive of Belle Isle, both on the north and south sides of the James River. Some of the notable local eateries are Kenn Tico Cuban Restaurant which offers an impressive array of gourmet and traditional mojito flavors, and Legend Brewing Co, the brew-pub sensation behind Legend craft beers.
Insider Tip for Visitors to Belle Isle
Bring a swimsuit, but be smart. The rapids around Belle Isle can get choppy and dangerous, and if the water looks rough, stick to sunbathing. Experienced sportsmen might consider kayaking the Belle Isle rapids, but for the average summer outing, it's best to err on the side of caution.
