The Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland is a must-see for train enthusiasts of all ages. The recently-built center houses three large locomotives that you are welcome to explore. The Center is also home to a rotating exhibit featuring the historical significance of railroads. On Saturdays you can ride the Oregon Pacific Railroad passenger train from the Center down along the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.
Parking and public transportation at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center
There are two handicapped parking spots available in front of the building. Other visitors can park at the free lot under the 99E Viaduct off SE Caruthers Street. By public transportation, take the Portland Streetcar to the SE Water/OMSI stop.
Best and worst time go to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center
The Center has limited hours, open from Thursday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you are interested in taking the Oregon Pacific Railroad trip along Oaks Bottom, come on a Saturday: These trains only depart on Saturdays from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the half hour.
Admission to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center
Admission to the Center is currently free, although donations to support the non-profit Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation are appreciated. Train rides along Oaks Bottom are an additional fee of approximately $5 per person ages two and up.
Must see/do at Oregon Rail Heritage Center
If you can make it on a Saturday, splurge for the train ride along Oaks Bottom. Oaks Bottom is a wildlife preserve extending several miles along the Willamette River. You can get beautiful views of the river as well as some local wildlife, including many different kinds of birds and even deer.
Other places to visit near Oregon Rail Heritage Center
The Center is walking distance to OMSI, Portland's science museum and another great stop for families. In addition to housing many exhibits, OMSI has several options for lunch or a quick snack. The Center is also within walking distance of the Springwater Corridor, a paved path that extends for miles along the Willamette River.

Most Portlanders know about the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation because of its yearly Holiday Express train ride. If you happen to be in Portland between Thanksgiving and Christmas, try to get tickets to this magical family-friendly event.
